Keeping Grease Off Your Range Hood Filters

Your rangehood filters are essential to keep the air in your kitchen fresher during searing and frying. They do so by sucking up smoke as well as any airborne grease droplets as you cook. With time, the filters capture more gunk, and if you don't do something about it, the gunk may clog the filters eventually. Dirty range hood filters will affect the air quality in your kitchen and may even attract pests. For this reason, regular cleaning of your range hood filters is necessary. If you have never done this before, here are a few guidelines to help you through the cleaning process.

Step 1: Prep Your Cleaning Vessel

For effective cleaning of your range hood filters, you will need to prepare some kind of a cleaning vessel. This could simply be a bucket or even a sink. The bottom line is that you want something in which your range hood filters can fit perfectly. The vessel should be heat resistant as well to withstand the hot water. Once you have your vessel, fill it with hot boiling water. Since the filters are usually greasy, the hotter the water is the better it will be at helping melt down the grease.

With the hot boiling water inside your cleaning vessel, squirt some degreasing soap and pour baking soda in the water. Carefully mix the solution by swishing it around.

Step 2: Remove The Filters

After you prepare your cleaning vessel, it's time to remove the filters. For most filters, you should easily pop them out or slide them from under the range hood. Usually, there will be a small latch or loop that can make it easy for you to pop or slide the filters off. Don't forget the way you removed the filters because you might have a problem fixing them back once they are clean.

Step 3: Submerge The Filters into The Water and Let Them Soak

Ensure your range hood filters are all the way inside the hot water and let them sit for a few minutes to allow the grease to melt. You should then scrub them thoroughly with a non-abrasive brush. An old toothbrush can also get the job done. Use tongs to flip your filters over as you continue scrubbing them until they are clean. When done, rinse them off in hot water and let them dry. You can even run them through your dishwasher for a few minutes to remove any residues.

Once your filters are air-dry you can reinstall them under your hood and make it a habit to clean them regularly.
